Classic phone — wasn’t what you wanted, was it?

I actually use three:

1. Coworkers get a ringtone that sounds identical to the phones in 24.
2. Family members get the standard ringtone from the iPhone ad.
3. Anyone not on lists 1 or 2 get a ringtone that is silent. No noise, no vibration, just silence. You can get it here.

The silent ringtone is awesome because it means if I ever hear the phone, it means a call I should take. If the phone just lights up, then depending on how busy I am I’ll consider checking the caller id.

And by the way, if anyone knows how to disable anonymous calling for AT&T phones, I would love to know about it.

Why is this American complaining about business practices in a different country? Easy: because it impedes his reach to buy their media markets too.

Let him bitch and moan all he wants, but there is no way he can cover the fact that BBC programming is simply superior to the crap that we have to put up with here in the states.

And I am not talking just about the news. BBC has some of the best fiction programming anywhere in the world. The best we can do is copy them, and we do it badly.

We copied Life on Mars, and ours sucked. Theirs was so damn good that they only ran two seasons, then moved on to a new storyline, another great show called Ashes to Ashes.

These disk platters are from the 60s and 70s — IBM first created the magnetic disk for secondary storage in 1956, and the first model used 5 platters to store 5MB of data. The technology is not too dissimilar to that used today, though there are obviously some improvements in storage capacity.

I am old enough that I got to work with a variant of the platter on the top right corner during my US Army enlistment (1992-1997). These came in transparent disk packs with a handle on top, and they were horribly delicate. When these got ruined, some of my artistically inclined coworkers would engrave them with mostly space/IT themes (we were a satellite communications unit). These were hung around our operation centers and contractor offices.
