Francisco “Paquito” Cordero has passed away at 77.

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Francisco “Paquito” Cordero has passed away at 77. : I am sad to learn that Paquito Cordero, a pioneer of Puerto Rican television, died today. He was 77. He was a cultural treasure to the Commonwealth, a genuinely funny guy that had a 50+ year career both acting in, and producing television shows that were watched by pretty much everyone in the island.

A warning to all WordPress users

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Please go to /wp-content/ and search each of your theme folders for a file called lol.php. If you find such a file, you have been compromised, either you got hacked already, or you are about to.

Veraperez.com compromised (again)

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

If you are one of my regular readers at veraperez.com, my wordpress install, which was brand new, was compromised sometime after 1 AM EDT today. The issue seems to be fixed, but it is one more nail in the wordpress coffin for all I can care. The attack originated in Kuwait (you’re welcome for Gulf War 1, assholes).

Please consider changing your bookmark to either http://insomniaccoder.com/ or to my friendfeed at http://friendfeed.com/pvera since I don’t ever post to veraperez.com directly, all of the content that you are seeing is being automatically posted as a mirror of insomniaccoder.com. Also, IC runs on Tumblr, which so far has done a stellar job in keeping the platform secure.

I am not shutting veraperez.com down any time soon, but like I said, please consider moving your bookmark. Also, the friendfeed is a great choice because it blends into one location all of my RSS feeds, so you can read my blogs and twitters at one spot.

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Court rules for white firefighters over promotions:

Maybe they need to learn how to do blind promotion boards, it is not so complicated:

  1. Anyone that is qualified (education, time on the job, things that can be measured objectively) takes an exam, which could be written, oral or both.
  2. Once you have a list of qualified personnel, pick the top X spots, which are the number of promotions you have to award.
  3. Have a panel review the personnel records of each of these top X candidates, except with things like race, sex, religion, etc. removed. If the panel sees a problem with one of these, then move down the list while keeping the same rules.

The end result is that the selection process is fair, yet you are still reassured that there is a manual review so people don’t get promoted automatically simply because they can cram for a test.

And there is no room for discrimmination arguments later. The criteria for being allowed to take the test is objective, and the record reviews are blind.

Monday, June 29th, 2009

“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”

Fresh Tiger Stripes on Saturn’s Enceladus.

This picture reminds me of the huge ice balls that PJ makes by leaving water-filled balloons in the freezer overnight.
