Chrysler, Fiat agree on global linkup

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Chrysler, Fiat agree on global linkup:

In a shocking development, Chrysler has announced that they are gong forward with the Fiat deal, just a couple of hours after it was announced that either they made the deal or they sucked it.

I am amazed it took the two hours for the announcement to go through. I mean, after all, they had to pick between two very difficult choices:

  1. Make the deal with Fiat, which will probably save Chrysler and help them to some $6 billion in extra loans, plus about $10 billion worth of technology transfers from Fiat, mostly in small car technology that Chrysler really needs. Or
  2. Suck it.

Decisions, decisions. I am glad that cooler heads prevailed and they picked the smart choice.

Ubiquity in action.

The best way I can describe Ubiquity is as a kickass version of the magic address bar in Firefox. You type something, and it tries to guess what you want to do. Type tinyurl and it’ll suggest that you want to do a tiny url with the highlighted URL, or you can type a URL to convert. Type wikipedia and it tries to search wikipedia AND it starts showing you hits as soon as you type.

Kickass.

Obama Administration To Chrysler, GM: Sorry, You Failed.

If the Fiat deal happens it would be nice if they use this as an excuse to bring the 500 to the states. I would love me a Fiat 500.

Model prisoner my ass. You know who else is a model prisoner and would really like to get out? Sirhan Sirhan. And Mark David Chapman.

How Microsoft put Apple owners on the defensive – Apple 2.0

A lot of my Mac fanboy brothers and sisters are crying foul over this ad. A lot. And for what? Microsoft finally figured out how that if you throw enough money at an ad agency, they are bound to come out with something clever.

Why blame Microsoft? All they did was hire an ad agency that was smart enough to turn the tables on us. And they are completely right: the “cool” factor is distracting people from being able to judge Apple’s offerings in an objective fashion.

In other words: not everyone wants to look like a douchebag. It is easier for me because I don’t care about peer pressure, and I don’t buy things to look cool, I buy them because I am a nerd. I do buy Apple computers because I get my money’s worth, they last a long time and they require a hell of a lot less maintenance to stay up and running.m But that’s just me.

I know plenty of people that simply can’t stomach the thought of being seen at a Starbucks with a $3,000 laptop, which is funny because it doesn’t bother them to be seen drinking a $4 cup of coffee.

The other campaign that they have out, and the one that is really getting under my skin, is the one with the little kids. Why? Because it is bullshit. Clever bullshit too. They don’t claim that it is hard for the kids to do that in a Mac. Instead they show that it is very easy for them to do it with Windows. I am sure that these kids will be able to do that in a Mac even faster, but it’s Microsoft’s campaign, so it’ll never happen.

The Wounded U.S. Newspaper Industry Lost $7.5 Billion in Advertising Revenues Last Year

Looks like chump change compared to what the auto industry is bleeding, but it is still a lot of Kindles, I mean, money. Sorry.

The problem is that it looks almost as if this is being blamed on the current money worries, when in reality we need to take into account that the U.S. Newspaper industry, even in a healthy economy, should have taken a dive thanks to the competition from online sources. The interesting part is that the numbers in the article try to take into account online activities, but only those from the papers themselves. They should have looked at what they are competing against.
